In May 2026, thanks to the incredible support of our community, we marked a major milestone: the completion of the phase two construction project at the Nhan Ai Orphanage.
This effort builds directly on work we began earlier this year to protect the children and their home from extreme weather.
The Challenge: Devastating Seasonal Rains
This past season, the orphanage was hit by torrential rains that caused devastating flooding, heavily damaging the main courtyard where the children play and gather. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, we stepped in immediately:
- Phase 1 (January): Funded and executed critical repairs to restore the damaged courtyard.
- Phase 2 (May): Focused entirely on long-term prevention to ensure this kind of flooding never happens again.
The Solution: Restoring the Infrastructure
Directly adjacent to the orphanage is a long drainage culvert designed to channel floodwaters away from the local community. Over time, however, the base of this culvert had severely degraded and filled with debris, creating a hazardous damming effect.
Coordinating closely with the resident nuns, we hired a professional construction crew to clear the blockage and completely repave the entire section of the culvert running next to the orphanage.
After a few weeks of hard labor, the project was successfully completed. Today, water flows steadily and safely down the culvert, away from the property.
New Beginnings and Heartfelt Thanks
Shortly after the project wrapped up, the nuns sent us a beautiful update. Along with photos of the finished construction, they shared pictures of the children—including a few newborn babies who were recently left at the orphanage gates. These vulnerable new arrivals now have a safer, dry, and secure environment to grow up in.
None of this would be possible without you. This vital infrastructure project was fully funded by the generosity of our donors: Steven Burger, Eamonn Gahan, Carolyn Chau-Kha, Hanh Tong, and Rebecca Berthelot.. Thank you for protecting these children and securing their home!
ABOUT THE NHAN AI ORPHANAGE
Founded in 1996 by Sister Nguyen Thi Bao Quyen, the Nhan Ai Orphanage resides behind the Giao Xu Phu Nhon Catholic Church in Cam Ranh, to the south of Nha Trang. The orphanage is run by the nuns of Nhan Ai and relies entirely upon donations, most of which come from people in the community. Nhan Ai is the largest orphanage that we assist and houses approximately 130 orphans in a wonderfully tranquil home. Several times a year, the nuns at the Nhan Ai Orphanage also arrange to assist poor communities in their area.
